What is the most Immersive Board Game You've Ever Played? with Timea Farkes
Substantial research has explored the experience of immersion in digital games, but it is unclear whether this phenomenon is experienced by board game players. Understanding whether and how immersion is experienced in board games can benefit games designers and researchers, for instance by informing the design and evaluation of new technologies developed to augment analogue games. This talk presents a discussion of how players within online board game communities—such as BoardGameGeek—define immersion, detailing the various ways players can actively influence their own immersion and that of those who participate in the same game alongside them. Furthermore, the key differences and similarities of digital and analogue games will be examined from a player-centric standpoint through how the inclusion of technology into analogue games changes the way people interact with them.
